Where can you study Urban Design in South Africa?
In South Africa there are currently two institutions that offer Urban Design as either a 1 year full-time or 2 year part time course. Both of these courses are post graduate, masters degrees with a minimum requirement of an honours degree in architecture, landscape architecture, city planning or other designer or built environment degrees.
University of Cape Town
The Urban Design Masters at UCT is an interdisciplinary studio-based course that addresses the increasingly large scale, complex, and diverse nature of cities that demand the expansion of traditional architectural capabilities to embrace an understanding of the structure and functioning, and three-dimensional design and management of human settlements.
University of Witwatersrand Johannesburg
The Urban Design Masters at Wits is an interdisciplinary studio-based think tank engaged with design visions, strategies and solutions for cities and towns, focussed on learning lessons from the globalising cities of the South.
